fRichard Horwitz: Photographer
Headshot of RIchard

Richard Horwitz has been watching eclipses since the mid-1950s and has been actively chasing them since 1970.

He spent 27 years as a photo editor for the Associated Press. As an avid amateur astronomer, AP called upon him to cover many "astronomical" assignments, and his photos of eclipses in particular have been widely used on newspaper front pages around the world.

He is, in fact, a veteran of 10 eclipse expeditions, including trips to Africa, Australia, Colombia, Canada, and Finland, and served as a "photography expert" for the Adler Planetarium's eclipse cruise off Mexico in 1991.

After retiring as senior photo editor for the AP in 1993, he co-founded Feature Photo Service, an agency that transmits publicity and corporate photos to newspapers over the AP satellite system.

Adding the 3 minutes and 45 seconds of totality in Aruba, he figures he has spent about 34 minutes in the shadow of the moon.
